On December 1, we want you to get down for a great cause! The Maria’s Tower RA staff is sponsoring the Pennies for Peace Dance-a-thon from 9:00 p.m. to midnight in the Multipurpose Room. There will be food, raffles, and music all night and proceeds will go to Pennies for Peace to help build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Pennies for Peace program began in 1994, when students at a Wisconsin elementary school raised 62,340 pennies that helped founder Greg Mortensen build his first school in Pakistan. Today, Pennies for Peace has tens of thousands of participants and has raised more than 30 million pennies to help educate children around the world.
You may usually tell the checkout clerk to keep the penny; you may let them fall on the ground and not pick them up; you may have them all over your car. For the next couple of weeks, collect them and bring them to the event on December 1. Your pennies can and will go a long way. One penny buys a pencil, opens the door to literacy, and gives lasting hope to children half a world away.
